Keith Montabo
Ravenna, Michigan | Age 19

Our son, Keith Daniel, was born February 4, 1985. He was the little brother to Jennifer and soon became her best friend. The kids were two and half years apart, but they were each other's confidant. Keith was smart. He completed all of his High School math requirements by the time he was done with eighth grade. He loved to play baseball and was good at it. His first love became music. He taught himself how to play the guitar, keyboard, drums, and coronet. Wanting to write music, he dual enrolled into the local college and took music theory. Just writing music soon wasn't enough, performing was the thing to do. He was soon the lead guitar in a band that he formed. The band was playing locally, but was branching out into other states.

When Keith was 16, we started to see changes in his behavior but just put it all to him being a teen. In January of 2004, Keith landed a full time job. In June he stood up with his big sister and watched her get married. His new brother-in-law considered Keith to be his best friend. Keith moved out on his own soon after that. We had heard a few comments from our daughter and son-in-law that Keith was "experimenting," but they weren't concerned so neither were my husband and I. On November 13, 2004, we received a knock on our door. It was a police officer telling us that our son had died. About an hour later, I found out that he had died of an overdose of Heroin and Cocaine.

Keith had so many dreams. He had a steady girlfriend. He wanted to visit or even live in Oakland, California. That was where he planned to further his music career. Friends later told us that Keith was getting "reckless," but they didn't want to act like his Mom. Now all we have is Keith's guitar and photos of our six foot son and his beautiful smile and quick wit. His sister has lost her confidant and only sibling. Three days after Keith's funeral, his sister found out that she was pregnant. Keith now has a niece that will never know her Uncle Keith.
